PASTEUR, Louis (1822-1895). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent ('Chère Madame', in Australia), Paris, 10 July 1888, closely written on pale green paper with printed monogram, 2 pages, 8vo, one line written on conjugate leaf.

An interesting letter on the progress of research to find a vaccine for anthrax ('"Charbon" ou "Cumberland disease"') in Australia, the associated trials of his proposal for reducing the rabbit population, and the lamentable dilatoriness of the Rabbit Commission.

The Pasteur Mission, directed by Adrien Loir and Louis Germont, was working in Australia to establish a means of preventing anthrax, known locally as 'Cumberland disease'. Successful trials of a vaccine made from a culture of the bacillus were carried out shortly after the present letter, in September 1888. At the same time, the Rabbit Commission was considering Pasteur's proposition that rabbits could be controlled by infecting them with chicken cholera but rejected it.
