PESTALOZZI, Johann Heinrich (1746-1827). Autograph letter signed ('Pestalozzi') to Canon Johannes Schultheß, Yverdon, 18 May 1817, one page, large 4to, integral address leaf, remnant of seal (seal tear, minor spotting).
'MY LIFE'S GOALS. Pestalozzi regrets the long lapse in correspondence with Schultheß (with whom he had founded in 1808 the short-lived Swiss Society for Education), but writes now in relation to a subscription appeal which attempts to achieve 'something essential towards my life's goals' ('als das mittel noch etwas wesentliches für die Zwekke meines Lebens leisten zu können'), asking Schultheß therefore to do what he can among his acquaintance and the circle of the defunct society; the letter ends with hopes that Pestalozzi will be granted the time and energy to achieve something towards the needs of mankind in the field of education: 'Wenn ich zu der Ruh u. Selbststendigkeit gelange der ich zur vollendung meiner arbeiten bedarff, -- so kann ich ... gewüs noch einen Beytrag zu dem liffren was die Menschheit im Fach der Erziehung jez so vorzuublich bedarf'.
