SCHELLING, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von (1775-1854). Autograph letter signed ('Schelling') to the philologist Friedrich Wilhelm Thiersch, Berlin, 13 April 1843, one page, 4to, integral address leaf (minor discolouration); with an engraved portrait.
A letter of recommendation for a young French theologian named Montet: the young man will show himself to be keen, energetic and well-informed, and he could be a commendable means towards a closer alliance of the two countries in their intellectual life and especially their literature: 'nach seinen Planen und Vorkenntnissen zweifle ich nicht, daß er einst ein sehr wirksames Werkzeug zu Verbreitung deutschen Wissens in seinem Vaterland und einer innigeren Verbindung zwischen deutscher und französischer Litteratur werden kann'.
Schelling had moved from Munich to Berlin in 1841, to take up his position as a Prussian privy councillor and member of the Berlin Academy.
