SPENER, Philip Jacob (1635-1705, 'the Father of Pietism'). Autograph letter signed ('Philipp Jacob Spener') to Johann Christian Schlegel, Dresden, 5 September 1688, four pages, 4to, bifolium (later annotation at foot).
Spener expresses his pleasure at the successful introduction of the catechism for children, but suggests the means for improving its popularity with adults: 'ich glaube, die beste Art sey wohl, die Examina mit solchem Fleiß, Treue und erbaulicher Geschicklichkeit anzustellen, daß immer von den Alten einer nach dem andern durch den Nutzen, welchen sie davon bey sich spühren, zu sothaner Ubung Besuchung angefrischet werde'; he goes on to discuss suitable pricing for the poorer country people, the preparation for communion, and refers to ordinands and a new rector in Zwickau.
Spener's foundation of pietism dated from his two major works, Pia desideria (1675) and Allgemeine Gottesgelehrtheit (1680) and his concommitent pastoral work in the Lutheran church in Frankfurt. He had been appointed court chaplain at Dresden in 1686, though his scrupulous dedication to pastoral duties soon placed him at odds with Elector John George III, and in 1691 he moved to rectorship of St Nicholas in Berlin.
