WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig (1889-1951). Autograph letter signed ('Ludwig Wittgenstein') to Friedrich Waismann, n.p., n.d. ('Dienstag', [after 22 June 1936]), 2 pages, 4to (small loss to left margin, not affecting text).
ON THE DEATH OF THE PHILOSOPHER MORITZ SCHLICK: Wittgenstein expresses his sense of loss, 'Der Tod Schlicks ist wirklich ein großes Unglück', and his uncertainty as to how to express himself to Schlick's widow, asking Waismann to communicate to the family Wittgenstein's position, and to let him know if this is impossible: 'Sollte es Ihnen unmöglich sein (außerlich oder innerlich) diese Botschaft zu überbringen, so bitte lassen sie mich's wissen'.
Moritz Schlick (1882-1936) was the founding father of logical positivism and the group of philosophers and scientists (including Friedrich Waismann) known as the Vienna Circle, and played a critical role in re-awakening Wittgenstein's interest in philosophy after 1924. He was murdered by a former student on 22 June 1936.
