A George III portable table orrery
William and Samuel Jones, London. Dated 1794
The orrery with brass pointer and comprising of a central brass Sun with revolving ivory inner planets Mercury and Neptune painted for day and night, the Earth with twelve coloured paper gores and revolving moon, mounted on a circular red painted oak horizon plate raised on turned feet and with hand-coloured engraved paper covering entitled Designed for the NEW PORTABLE ORRERIE BY W. JONES/and made and sold by W.& S. JONES 30 Holborn LONDON, with an illustration of the relative size of the planets, further quartered into seasons with the solstices and equinoxes shown, the circumference with Zodiac and calendar scales dated 1794, edged in red
