Lot Essay

Abraham de Lust is first recorded in Amsterdam in the 1650's and later travelled to Lyon where he was stylistically influenced by contemporary French still-life painters. By 1659, de Lust was living in Leeuwarden. In the past there has been some confusion over attributions to Abraham de Lust, with many pictures being misattributed to Antonie Hendrickz. Lust, an Amsterdam painter born before 1595. This confusion is thought to have stemmed from an article by Alfred Bredius in 1935, who, unaware of Abraham's existence, wrongly attributed works to Antonie.
