No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more THE FOLLOWING EIGHTEEN LOTS ARE THE FORMER PROPERTY OF THE ENGLAND AND MIDDLESEX BATSMAN, SIR PELHAM FRANCIS WARNER (1873-1963) Sir Pelham ("Plum") Warner captained the victorious England team on the Australian 1903 tour, led the team in South Africa in 1905 and again in Australia in 1911. He hit 1,000 runs in a season 14 times, going on to 2,000 once in 1911. His highest innings was 244 for Rest of England v. Warwickshire at the Oval in 1911, and he hit two other double centuries, one in New Zealand and one for MCC v. Sussex. He captained Middlesex from 1908 to 1920. From 1905 to 1938 he was intermittantly a Test selector and in 1937 he was knighted for his services to cricket. In 1950-51 he was President of MCC and from 1946 to 1961 a Trustee of the Club. When he married in 1904, the publishers of Wisden, John Wisden & Co., presented him with the first 41 years of the Almanack as a wedding present. London: John Wisden, 1864-67. 4 volumes in one, 8vo., fragment of 1864 front wrapper tipped in with price inscribed in ink, ms slip inserted between pp. 102-3 (first title tipped in, some margins cropped close, occasional thumb soiling), green half calf, gilt spine dated and numbered "Vol. 1" (rubbed and bumped, inner hinges split), red speckled edges (original wrappers not bound in). Provenance: occasional ink and pencil markings -- P.F. Warner. FIRST, SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH EDITIONS.
