Lot Essay

Though almost an exact contemporary of Rubens, Vrancx's paintings are stylistically reminiscent of his predecessors Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel. The present picture can be dated to circa 1622, showing as it does a clear-cut and determined handling of form that is characteristic of his mature period.
