A MEISSEN HAUSMALEREI GOLDCHINESEN TEABOWL AND SAUCER
CIRCA 1725
Decorated at Augsburg in the Seuter workshop, the teabowl with two vignettes of Oriental figures on terraces, one with figures by a crenelated tower on a lambrequin support, the other with figures beside a palm tree on a trellis support, below gilt scalloped and scroll borders, the underside of the saucer with three vignettes of figures on grassy terraces, one with three figures by a bird house, one figure with a parrot on a pole, below a similar border, the saucer obverse, the teabowl interior and underside all richly gilt (teabowl with slight wear to one figure and rim, saucer with areas of wear to obverse and to centre of reverse)

Provenance

King Umberto of Italy, sale Christie's Geneva, 7th June 1968, lot 109 (part) for the teabowl and lot 110 (part) for the saucer.
Anon., sale Christie's Geneva, 10th November 1986, lot 195 (part).
With Segal, Basel, from whom it was acquired in November 1986.

The present saucer is illustrated by Siegfried Ducret, Meissner Porzellan (Brunswick, 1971), p. 211, fig. 252, along with the teabowl from the same service (formerly in lot 110, 7th June 1968).

Lot Essay

Three teabowls and saucers from the same service were sold from King Umberto's Collection by Christie's Geneva in 1968, and have since been dispersed. The teabowl from lot 109 was combined with the saucer from lot 110, and were sold together in November 1986.
