Lot Essay

This work represents one of the naval operations in the Aegean carried out by the Allied Fleets and depicts the H.M.S. Ajax lying off the island of Santorini after the German garrison had surrendered to the British cruiser. Santorini was one of the many islands in the Aegean liberated by vessels of the Royal Navy. H.M.S. Ajax one of the Leander class cruisers was laid down by Vickers Armstrong in February 1933, she was launched in March 1934 and completed in June 1935. She has a length of 530 feet and a displacement of 6985 tons. She had 6½ inch guns and had a speed of 32½ knots.
The Greek island of Santorini or Thera is located in the Cyclades islands, in the Aegean Sea. It is the most southerly of the Cycladic islands and one of a small group of volcanic islands. It was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions and what remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera.
