1953 BUICK SKYLARK CONVERTIBLE
Chassis No. 53-4767SX
Body No. G848
Engine: Fireball V8, 322ci., 200bhp at 4,100rpm; Gearbox: Dynaflow three speed automatic; Suspension: front independent, coil springs and rear live axle, rear, leaf springs, telescopic dampers; Brakes: hydraulic drums all around. Left hand drive.
The background history for Buick's Skylark model is covered separately in the description for the lot following this car.
If the verbal information that we are provided with is correct and supported by the car itself, which has an engraved horn push proclaiming 'Customized for A. P. Hitchcock', the car may well have been delivered new to the legendary Film Director Alfred Hitchcock. This does however remain to be definitively confirmed.
The car will have been in the present ownership for approximately 20 years from the main gathering period of this collection and is most likely to have been sourced in America. From inspection, the car has been repainted at some stage, but not totally restored, with the result that the paintwork is in some places lifting and we also noted the door fit not to be perfectly aligned. The interior similarly is ostensibly original with the sole exceptions of the carpets and bottom of the front bench seat which have been replaced. The dash is equipped with radio, heater/defroster, air-conditioning and period clock.
Mechanically, at the time of cataloguing the car was being lightly re-commissioned to see it could be run and it is anticipated that this should be successfully completed by the time of the sale. Regardless of this, owing to the car's long term display storage, we would strongly advise for the sensible precaution of full mechanical servicing prior to any road use.
A good example which could benefit from sympathetic tidying and which would naturally be all the more interesting if its Hitchcock provenance were to be proven.
