Lot Essay

This understated bottle probably appealed to the literati as the subdued color of the lacquer would have appealed to the scholar-artist. A plain black lacquer bottle dated to the 18th century is illustrated in the 1993 Chinese Snuff Bottle Engagement Diary compiled by Clare Lawrence. It is rare to find an undecorated lacquer bottle as most bear scholarly inscriptions or designs.
