Lot Essay

The Catskill mountains are situated in New York State, northwest of New York City and west of the Hudson River. When Hartwick painted this scene the area had been used for many centuries by farmers of Dutch colonial descent. Hartwick worked in the style of George Durrie, Thomas Birch and Joseph Morviller amongst others.
