A GERMAN HAND PAVISE, IN LATE 15TH CENTURY STYLE
19th Century
Of wooden rectangular construction faced with leather or vellum, the outer-covering sewn onto the body using hide stitches, of acutely corregated form with strongly convex central gutter, the inner-face painted dark red and fitted with hide loops top and bottom together with a T-shaped grip constructed of coarse wood and hide, the outer-face painted with a concentric pattern of black linear panels on a dark red ground and enclosing at the centre a black and white rectangle charged with an heraldic device (the grip a working replacement, the painted surfaces in un-restored original condition, now deteriorated).
