AN ITALIAN EMBOSSED 'ANIME' HALF-ARMOUR, IN THE STYLE OF CIRCA 1540
19th Century
Embossed in the Milanese Mannerist style of Filippo Negroli, comprising burgonet with one-piece skull, each side decorated with a volute developing into a spray of acanthus leaves diminishing towards the nape, pointed peak and neck-guard, a later pair of hinged cheek-pieces, recessed borders with turned, filed, cabled edges, and studded with brass lining rivets, cuirass of 'anime' construction, the breast-plate overlaid with an embossed separate plate decorated with a winged cherub mask, the basal plate en suite and involving another human mask, with skirt of two lames, and the back-plate also overlaid with a relief plate below the neck, this decorated with a demon mask in relief, with a pair of large spaulders embossed alla romana, the main plate decorated with a large lion mask left and right, a pair of short tassets formed of six articulations, and the main edges turned and roped throughout (leathers and buckles replaced throughout).
