A RARE GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE
circa 1660-70
With swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with six grooves, cut with decorative bands at the breech and muzzle and lightly incised with the early inventory number 26 at the breech, flat lock overlaid with a brass plate pierced and engraved with flowers and foliage, fitted with brass wheel-cover cast with concentric mouldings, sliding pan-cover with brass rosette release, and the dog with brass bridle cast with a cherub mask, fruitwood full stock inlaid at the rear with horn pellets and engraved horn plaques, including a running stag on the cheekpiece, fluted fore-end (one expert small repair), the butt with fluted horn thumb-rest and sliding patch-box cover, the latter veneered in horn and engraved with a grazing stag, horn butt-plate, engraved horn ramrod-pipes and matching fore-end cap, iron trigger-guard, set trigger, horn-tipped ramrod (perhaps the original), and retaining its original 19th Century lead ownership seal.
