Lot Essay

This type of elegant brass-mounted armchair in the Russian Jacob style was developed in the 1790s, and various examples can be found in virtually all the Romanov palaces and in the collections of the Russian elite. A sofa with conformingly decorated back was in the Russian Imperial Collections, illustrated in G.K. Loukomski, Mobilier et Décoration des Anciens Palais Impériaux Russes, Paris, 1928, pl.XLVIII. For a closely related chair see Antoine Cheneviére, Russian Furniture 1780-1840, London, 1988, pp.110-114, pl. 141.
