Lot Essay

This type of elegant brass-mounted dining chair was conceived in the Russian Jacob style and is derived from models made by Heinrich Gambs (1765-1831) in the late 18th century. A set of related chairs is in the study at Pavlovsk, illustrated in E. Ducamp, Pavlovsk, the Palace and the Park, Paris, 1993, pp. 163-163, and a further trellis-back chair at Monplaisir, is illustrated in A. Cheneviére, Russian Furniture, London, 1988, p.121, fig. 104. A set of twelve chairs of similar design were sold from The Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen C. Hilbert, Sotheby's, New York, 24 May 2007, lot 17.
