Dollar Sign

Warhol's Dollar Sign is a small gem, presenting itself as a commanding and beautiful work. The soft sea-foam green is an unexpected shade and manages to soften the hard and otherwise cold image of the ubiquitous dollar sign image. Many of Warhol's Dollar Sign paintings are big, bold and in-your-face images featuring loud colors producing an inflated parody of America's wealth and consumerism. This painting, a sweeter version, packs all of the punch of the large paintings, but offers a subtle sense of vulnerability.

Iris Love acquired this Dollar Sign painting in a typically remarkable and ironic Warholian fashion. A well-known archaeologist and a friend of Warhol's, Love's mingling and partying at the Factory is recorded for posterity by Warhol in his infamous Warhol Diaries. Love was raising money for her most well-known archeological dig at Knidos and was discussing her fundraising with Warhol. Warhol gifted Love this Dollar Sign painting as his contribution in honor of her efforts.
