Lot Essay

These elegant vases are reminiscent of the French fashion adopted by marchands-merciers such as London 'Chinaman' Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845), who established his Hanway Street business trading in Sèvres about 1806, and principally dealt with 18th Century French and English objets de luxe and Chinese export porcelain.
A pair of baluster vases with rich and intricately-chased ormolu mounts attributed to Baldock, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 15 April 1999, lot 31.
