The moulded eared white marble top above two long drawers mounted with laurel garlands and centred to the shaped apron by a leaf wrapped cartouche, the sides with conforming decoration, the front angles headed by rams-masks issuing a scrolled acanthus mount, on carbriole legs with foliate cast sabots

Lot Essay

This commode is derived from the celebrated model produced by the workshop of Jean-François Oeben, but which may have been made by Jean-François Leleu. It was bought by Richard Wallace for the 4th Marquess of Hertford at the Earl of Clare sale, Christie's, 16 June 1864.
