Lot Essay

A closely related florentine console table executed during the second quarter of the 18th century, now conserved in the Appartamento degli Arazzi, prima sala, Palazzo Pitti, Florence, is believed to be part of a suite of six console tables carved 'con festoni, fogliami, medaglioni e maschere' executed by florentine carvers and retailed to the Court by the tappezziere Gaetano Seti circa 1750. Similar foliate exotic masks to the legs as well as conforming pierced scrolled frieze are to be related to the console table offered here. See E. Colle, I Mobili di Palazzo Pitti, Il primo periodo lorenese 1737-1799, Florence, 1992, fig. 33, p. 103.
