[VESALIUS, Andreas]. LEVELING, Heinrich Palmaz (1742-98). Anatomische Erklärung der Original-Figuren von Andreas Vesal, samt einer Anwendung der Winslowischen Zergliederungslehre in sieben Büchern. Ingolstadt: Anton Attenzhouer, 1783.
2o (449 x 289 mm). Pictorial woodcut title from the first folio edition, letterpress title dated 1783 with engraved vignette portrait of Leveling by Jungwierth dated 1782, 2 full-page woodcuts from the Epitome (1543) on inserted leaves, and over 200 woodcut text illustrations (24 full-page). (Pictorial title mounted to face printed title, a few marginal repairs, minor browining.) 20th-century quarter vellum and boards, uncut (some light rubbing to edges). Provenance: early owners signature on title; Edgar and Alison Mauer (bookplate).
LIMITED EDITION, one of 1500 copies, the second (and usual) issue of the last edition to use the original woodblocks of the Fabrica and Epitome prior to the Bremer Presse edition of 1934-35. The blocks were destroyed in the bombing of Munich during World War II. For this edition, the distinguished Bavarian anatomist and surgeon H. P. Leveling prepared a German translation of Vesalius's brief explanation for each of the woodcuts together with the original text immediately following each chapter heading in the Fabrica, revising the text throughout according to the work of anatomist Jakob Winslow (1669-1760). The book was issued to subscribers in fascicles between 1781 and 1783.
Cushing was able to locate only two copies of the rare first issue dated 1781 (Cushing VI.A-14). Some copies contain either a short list of subscribers issued with the first fascicle or a longer list issued with the last (as here). Cushing VI.A-15; Heirs of Hippocrates 1042; Osler 573; Waller 5752; Wellcome III, p. 508. 33374.
