GUIDI, Guido (1508-1569). De anatome corporis humani libri VII. Venice: Giunta, 1611.

2 parts in one, 2o (304 x 216 mm). Engraved title by Franco Vallegio and Catarin Doino, 79 engravings in text, woodcut illustrations in text. (Lacking 2 blanks, running title and pagination occasionally trimmed, a few short marginal tears.) 18th-century quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt with red morocco lettering-piece (light wear to corners).

FIRST EDITION. Composed around 1560, and published posthumously, Guidi's anatomy contains descriptions of the vertebrae, cartilaginous structures and cranial bones superior to those of his predecessors; Guidi's name is still attached to the canal of the sphenoid bone ("Vidian canal") and the nerve that traverses it ("Vidian nerve"). The baroque title-page is signed in the plate by both Francesco Valesio, active as an engraver in Venice from about 1611 to 1643, and Catarin Doino, Valesio's frequent collaborator. Compared to the magnificent woodcuts in the Chirurgia which Guidi published in Paris, 1545, the anatomical illustrations in this posthumous work have been characterized as indifferent in quality. It is likely that the plates were prepared by Valesio and Doino, engravers of the title-page.

Anatomia comprises Vol. iii of the collection of Guidi's works, published under the general title Ars Medicinalis. The volume also contains the second edition of Guidi's Chirurgia. Garrison-Morton 380; Herrlinger, pp. 168-169; NLM/Krivatsy 5118; Norman 955; Roberts & Tomlinson pp. 234-35; Waller 3816.
