HUNTER, John. Observations on certain parts of the animal oeconomy. London: Printed and Sold at No. 13, Castle Street and by G. Nicol, J. Johnson, 1792.

4o (258 x 204 mm). 19 engraved plates after drawings by Jan van Rymsdyk (fl.1760-1770) and William Bell, engraved by W. Sharp, P.C. Canot and William Skelton (minor faint foxing to a few plates). Early 19th-century tree calf, red morocco lettering-piece. Provenance: M. N. Bal? (pencil signature on title).

Second edition of this collection of papers, most of which had previously appeared in slightly different versions in the Philosophical Transactions. The collection includes the first printing of Hunter's paper on the structure of the placenta, in which he claimed priority over his brother William in the discovery of the circulatory relationship between the placenta and the uterus; this resulted in a quarrel and estrangement between the two brothers that lasted until William's death in 1783. Among the other papers in the collection are Hunter's two studies of hermaphrodism, his report on the air-cells of birds, and his paper on resuscitating the drowned which established the essentials of treatment for this condition. Norman 1118.
