Lot Essay

The sculptor of this early and rare Barhut example displays a keen sense for the form, which would evolve into greater refinement in later Mathuran examples of pillar sculpture; compare with the famous example at the Norton Simon Museum, see P. Pal, Asian Art at the Norton Simon Museum, Vol. 1: Art from the Indian Subcontinent, 2003, cat. no. 12, p. 45.
