A FINELY CARVED BOXWOOD LOW TABLE SCREEN
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The panel well carved as a terraced garden with an immortal at rest, his left arm resting on a cushion-form box from which emerges swirling lingzhi-form clouds, his right hand raised on his knee in a gesture of peace, the borders formed by rocky ledges and pine trees, some hung with vines, a slab table with two barrel-form garden seats to one side
10 1/8 in. (25.6 cm.) long, fitted zitan stand

Specialist note

Boxwood (huangyangmu) is a slow-growing evergreen found worldwide. The dense quality of the wood, with its creamy yellowish-brown coloration and tendency to develop a lustrous and richly colored patina, made it a favorite of carvers during the Qing dynasty. This unusually low table screen would have been an ideal addition to the desk of a scholar, providing both inspiration and a calming diversion from daily activities.
