Of tall irregular shape carved as two peaks with a cleft between them, through which rushes a waterfall carved on one side, vapor rising from the falls supports a ledge above on which stands Xiwangmu flanked by attendants holding fans, while below three immortals carrying a bottle, a ruyi scepter and a peach are shown walking along a rocky path with a pine tree at either end, with a deer and a crane standing on two ledges and a peach tree and lingzhi sprouting from others, on the reverse two more immortals followed by a crane cross a bridge near the base, with a pine tree and further lingzhi above, the pale greenish-white stone with some opaque white mottling

Lot Essay

This carving most likely depicts the Kunlun Mountains where Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, resides, and represents the 'Peach Banquet' held every three thousand years when the peaches in her peach orchard ripen, and many immortals are invited to the harvesting and to partake of these peaches of immortality.
