Lot Essay

Related to Haydon's 1814 painting The Judgement of Solomon in the Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery (D.B. Brown, Benjamin Robert Haydon 1786-1846, Cumbria, 1996, p. 11, repr.). The two children holding tablets in the drawing are replaced in the painting by two women swooning with one holding an infant. The clouds in which the scene takes place in the drawing are replaced by classical columns in the painting.
