Lot Essay

The figures are related to those in an 1842 painting by Uwins, Italian mother teaching her child the Tarantella (London, Victoria and Albert Museum). The Tarantella is a southern Italian folk dance named after the town of Taranto. Uwins was in Italy from 1824-31.
