No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more THE PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTOR (Lots 117-119) Evgeny Alexandrovich Lanceray (1848-1886) specialised in equestrian subjects with much of his work based on themes from his native Russia. He was born in St. Petersburg, but spent much of his working life in Paris where his name was often translated to Lanceré and his large contemporary appeal resulted in the Susse foundry publishing a catalogue of over one hundred of his models. However both of the examples offered here were cast by the French fondeur F. Chopin who established himself in St. Petersburg in 1838, was by 1857 considered to be the principal supplier to the Imperial court and exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Chopin is known to have also produced versions of each of these groups dated 1870.

The naturalistic base signed in Cyrillic E. LANCERAY with indistinct F. CHOPIN foundry inscription and round cachet, on a black marble base, the underside with paper label for H. LUPPENS & CIE/Boulevard Anspach, 46, 48, 50/BRUXELLES/USINE 15, RUE DE DANEMARK/LUSTRES, BRONZES, PENDULES
The bronze: 10½ in. (26.5 cm.) high; 9½ in. (24 cm.) wide; 4 5/8 in. (11.5 cm.) deep; The base: 2¼ in. (5.5 cm.) high; 10¾ in. (27.5 cm.) wide; 5½ in. (14 cm.) deep
