Lot Essay
This cabinet shares subtle similarities with the work of Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen (d. 1871). Favouring furniture in the 'Boulle' and Louis XVI styles, Winckelsen was particularly well-known for the quality of his bronze mounts and the fine examples gracing the present lot are consistent with his output.
Winckelsen counted amongst his illustrious clientele prince Radziwil and the Lafittes, but since he worked in Paris for only a short time, from 1854 until his death, only a relatively small amount of his work is available on the market today.
After his death Winckelsen's widow sold his workshop and remaining stock to Henry Dasson, who continued his tradition of high quality workmanship and in whose oeuvre Winckelsen's influence is clearly apparent.
