Peacock and Lilies 'Peacock and Lilies' was Bells' first and final English pattern name, registered in 1887. Marketing agents for the manufacturer realised the importance of using Malaysian titles to promote their products overseas; following this, all export pieces were named in their local language. This pattern shows an Oriental peacock displaying its full plumage amongst tropical plants and lilies. Scottish artists would certainly have had access to the wonderful displays of rare and exotic plants housed in botanical gardens and glass houses of the Victorian period. Kibble Palace in Glasgow was noted for its large collection of rare ferns and other tropical plants. It is possible that Bells artists made direct botanical studies for patterns such as this.
