Lot Essay

The elaborate crown of this very finely carved head allows for an identification as either Vishnu or Surya; compare with P. Pal, Asian Art at the Norton Simon Museum, Vol. 1: Art from the Indian Subcontinent, 2003, cat. no. 108, p. 150.
