Depicting concentric bands of land with enthroned Jinas at cardinal points and water filled with animals, Mount Meru at center, all annotated with inscriptions, bordered by a band of greenery, with Jinas flanked by devotees in temples at each corner, accompanied by elephants and peacocks, all within a red floral border

Lot Essay

The present example is exceptionally rich with Jain iconography, including the kalasha in the Lavanasamudra ("salt ocean"), and Jinas with devotional figures along the north-south axis of the continents and the east-west axis of the Kalodadhi ("black ocean"). It also depicts a variety of plants and animals, the terrestrial creatures unusually placed alongside the sea-dwellers in the oceans.
