Lot Essay

The original Venus de' Medici was first recorded in the Villa Medici in Rome in 1638. It was sent to Florence in 1677 and was exhibited in the Tribuna of the Uffizi where it remains. It has been one of the most popular works of sculpture ever since its discovery and so has been copied and reproduced many times - Louis XIV of France had five copies made.
