(Scattered mostly marginal spotting and on guards.) Publisher's original blind-stamped cloth, upper side titled in gilt, gilt edges, white moiré silk endpapers (extremities rubbed, light soiling).

RARE. The first revised (first English) edition of one of the earliest and most comprehensive works of photographic ethnology. The eminent Oxford anthropologist, Edward Burnett Tylor, reviewing the first edition in Nature, described it as 'one of the most important contributions made to the science of man' (1876, pp.184-5). Originally published in German and in large folio, this smaller-format edition reached a much broader audience, affording rare glimpses of foreign cultures. Edwards, Anthropology and Photography 1860-1920 (1992), pp. 55, 57.
