Lot Essay

Celebrated for his fine work on Scott's Terra Nova expedition in 1910-12, Ponting took up photography in California in 1900. He toured the Far East in 1901, beginning a series of assignments which took him to Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia, China and India over the following five years. The present rare Alpine subject dates to 1908 when he visited Switzerland and France to take mountain photographs.
