Lot Essay

Berchtesgaden came under Bavarian rule in 1810 and was favoured by the royal family who visited Königsee and kept a royal hunting residence in the town itself. The town attracted visitors and artists began to work here, attracted by the trade -- their gathering point the 'Malereck' (painters' corner) on the edge of the lake.

Mount Watzmann at 2713m is the third highest mountain in Germany, famous among climbers for its Ostwand.

Biermann was a founder member of the Berliner Landschaftsmalerei. He began his career as a porcelain artist before concentrating on landscape painting in Bavaria, Switzerland, the Tirol and Italy.
