Smythe led the first successful expedition to conquer Kamet (7,756m) in 1931, the first peak over 25,000 feet to be climbed. On his return Smythe lectured to the Royal Geographical Society on 'Explorations in Garhwal around Kamet' and later published an account of his climb, Kamet Conquered in 1932.

Smythe took part in the Everest expeditions of 1933, 1936, and 1938, and in 1933 equalled the height record (c.28,000 feet) established by Edward Norton in 1924.
