NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1901-1904
A group of letters relating to the National Antarctic Expedition, from the collection of Cyril Longhurst, secretary to the expedition, comprising: two letters from a royal equerry, 17 December 1901 and 2 January 1902, to Sir Clements Markham and to Longhurst, referring to an exchange of 'cablegrams' between Edward VII and Captain Scott; an autograph manuscript letter of reference for Longhurst by Vice-Admiral Pelham Aldrich, 20 October 1903, paying tribute to his work in fitting out the Terra Nova (with a related newspaper cutting); a postcard signed by a member of the expedition ('George') to Longhurst, showing the Discovery and the relief ships 'As we lay on Feb 15th '04'; a related menu;
with a group of autograph letters not related to polar exploration, by EDWARD VII (to his Prime Minister, H.H. Asquith, Catania, 25 April 1909, referring to the Board of Admiralty and the Committee of Imperial Defence, three pages, 4to, envelope), George Nathaniel, Marquess CURZON of Kedleston (to Edward Carson, 23 August 1911, on the prospect of Home Rule in Ireland, 'it would be a great pity to reach a point where one section advocates extreme measures by which I mean civil war -- while the other hangs back', 11 pages, 8vo); and Field Marshal Lord Roberts (1901, on his return from South Africa);
with two unframed photographs of the Committee of Imperial Defence, to which Longhurst was Assistant Secretary, one with signatures on the image (torn with losses); a silver cigarette box presented to Longhurst by 'THE SECRETARIAT OF THE COMMITTEE OF IMPERIAL DEFENCE', engraved thus on lid with five facsimile signatures; Longhurst's Order of the Bath decoration (with accompanying booklet 'Statutes of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath. May, 1915.'), King George V Silver Jubilee Medal 1935, and King George VI Coronation Medal 1937, with miniatures, all in the original boxes; Longhurst's death certificate, dated 23 April 1948; and, four documents relating to the appointments of Arthur Edwin Temple Longhurst (Cyril Longhurst's father) as 'Surgeon to the Forces'.
