The album contains the work of several artists: in addition to the works dated to the early 1800s, a large number of later figure studies (probably copies of prints) and a handful of works which may be by Company School artists.
From the evidence of many of the subjects, one of the artists would appear to be an associate of Sir Henry Gwillim, East India Company chief justice in Madras and an outspoken critic of the governor (Henry William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 4th Duke of Portland, governor 1803-07) and governance of Madras in the early 1800s. His wife Elizabeth died in India on 21 December 1807.
