Oblong 2° (297 x 430mm). 64 albumen photographs (200 x 250mm) mounted on 64 card leaves with cloth stubs, contemporary manuscript captions in English and Dutch, and photographer's inventory number in margins. Contemporary black goatskin, lettered and bordered in gilt (short tear in upper hinge).
EXCELLENT COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM of Indonesian subjects before 1880. None are with the Woodbury & Page imprint but have been identified as their work. Scenic views are of Batavia, Bandung, Samarang and Surabaya. Portraits include the Emperor and Empress of Solo, and a fine full-length portrait of Raden Saleh (d.1880), celebrated artist originally from Samarang and illustrator of many fine books on Indonesia including Blume's Rumphia (q.v.). He is shown holding what may be one of his own illustrated books. Also pictured is his very elaborate mansion near Batavia, a conglomerate of East Indian and European influences in high Victorian taste. Bastin & Brommer p.330; Reed, pp.29-35.
