SOLAIA
The Antinori family has enjoyed over six hundred years of winemaking in Tuscany, giving Solaia the distinction of being a super Tuscan of fine lineage. Throughout its history, the Antinori family tradition has been steeped in wine beginning with Giovanni di Piero Antinori's registration with the Guild of Winemakers in 1385. Today descendant Marchese Piero Antinori's winemaking ethos governs the wines and though he has not forgotten his ancestry, he claims, "Ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation."Antinori began bottling the single vineyard Solaia, meaning "sunny one," from a 10 hectare vineyard contiguous to Tignanello in 1978. The wine started in 1978 as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and grew in 1982 to include Sangiovese. Together with the much-marveled Sassicaia, Solaia proved to the world the prowess of Cabernet Sauvignon in Tuscany.
