Lot Essay

This is a copy of Spring painted in watercolour by Walker in 1864, which, together with Autumn, is also in the Victorian & Albert Museum Collection. The painting shows a young girl picking primroses with a boy companion. The trees are quite bare, but the flowers, symbolic of young love, herald the rebirth of nature and the blossoming of the young girl into womanhood.
