Lot Essay

Chiparus produced a small number of paintings during his lifetime. These were not produced for commercial sale, but for his own personal pleasure. His preferred subjects were studies of his wife Julienne Lullier, as well as, landscapes and still lifes. Chiparus met Lullier, sixteen years his junior in 1924. They eventually married in 1939 after living together for fifteen years. Although Chiparus employed life models as a source for his sculpture designs, it was inevitable that Julienne's physiognomy informed his work, whether consciously or subconsciously.
