Leoville-Las Cases
Jean-Hubert Delon the fourth generation proprietor of Leoville-Las Cases continues the trend of producing great wines the equivalent of a first growth wine begun by his father in the mid 1970s on this large meticulously kept estate. The emphasis on quality has been long standing, though, with a second wine for declassified juice being introduced as early as the 1902 vintage with even a third wine now in the fold. Close proximity and similar soil to Chateau Latour becomes a more muscular style than typical in St. Julien intensified by the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Leoville-Las Cases is full-bodied, concentrated and tannic wine. Indeed, a quintessential claret which says, "I am the lion which does not bite unless the enemy attacks first."
Château Léoville-Las-Cases--Vintage 1978
Saint-Julien, 2me cru classé
Levels: Top shoulder, bin soiled labels; slight signs of seepage
"The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never fully melt away. While it will last another 15-20 years, the 1978 is at its apogee and will slowly dry out over the next two decades." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #101 (Oct 1995)
