ZIND HUMBRECHT

With the myriad regulations, grapes and climates of Alsace causing confusion among many fine wine lovers, there is increasingly one name that guarantees quality before all: Zind Humbrecht. Though the family has been in the business of wine since 1620, this domaine was officially founded in 1959 by father Léonard Humbrecht when he married Genevieve Zind. Today the winery is run by his son, Olivier Humbrecht, who in addition to his title of winemaker, also has the rare privilege of adding MW as a coda to his name, as he was the first Frenchman to qualify for the prestigious title of Master of Wine. The domaine strictly adheres to biodynamic principles in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar in order to coax the maximum expression of terrior out of each wine they produce. Yields are severely restricted and the wines are never chapatlized, an extraordinary fact given their richness and intensity.

The holdings of the estate have greatly expanded in recent years as Olivier and Léonard have scouted out vineyards to add to their portfolio. Lands that lie abandoned due to the steepness of slope were eagerly adopted and replanted; now horses and hand-harvesting solve the problems of exposition that scared away less adventurous vignerons! Today the Humbrechts own forty hectares scattered across the Haut-Rhin. Classified Grand Cru vineyards include Hengst, Brand, Rangen and Goldert along with recognized Grand Cru quality sites such as Rotenberg, Heimbourg and Herrenweg. In addition, the family own monopoles of enclosed sites called Clos: Clos Hauserer, the terraced vineyards of Clos Windsbuhl, and Clos Jebsel and the coveted Clos St. Urbain, which is a subset of Rangen. Planted grapes vary according to site, but ZH also works with Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gew,rztraminer, Auxerrois and Chardonnay.

The wines, while distinct descendants of their respective vineyard, all possess the characteristic Zind-Humbrecht concentration of flavor, balance of natural sweetness with racy acidity and ability to age. The Humbrecht family is universally admired for their passion and dedication to the craft of winemaking and their commitment to quality
