The subject matter of Sirak Melknonian's abstract paintings ranges from alien landscapes (see lot 111) and otherwordly objects through to exercises in light and shade. A recurrent theme is his fascination with dimensions, the compression and extension of space, but without reference to the familiar. The resulting images are both emotionally engaging, while at the same time oddly detached.
